Info & Insights
Type #6 plastic, also known as polystyrene or PS, is a thermoplastic polymer that is commonly used for packaging, insulation, and products such as disposable foam plates, trays, and hot beverage cups. It can be rigid or expanded (foam).
Examples of expanded polystyrene aka styrofoam
- Clam shell takeaway food containers
- Styrofoam disposable cups
- Protective packaging for fragile items
- Foam insulation for walls, roofing, and flooring
Examples of rigid polystyrene
- Yakult and Vitagen bottles
- Coat Hangers
- CD and DVD cases
- Light switch plates
- Electronic housings and components
- Some medical equipment and supplies
Note that while some of these are officially accepted in blue bins, there is actually no way for them to be recycled in practice so we recommend that you throw them out if you are unable to find a way to reuse them.
